Straight Outta Compton Sets Even More Box Office Records, Zach Efron's New EDM Film Tanks

It looks like there is no stopping Straight Outta Compton's domination of the US box office.

The music biopic that charts the rise of legendary rap group N.W.A. finished atop the charts for a third week in a row. It's the first film to accomplish that since Jurassic World stormed into theatres a couple of months back.

Those two films are a big reason for Universal's record breaking year. The studio is now officially the fastest in history to crack the $2 billion mark at the North American box office.

It owes its success in 2015 to a stellar lineup that includes Furious Seven, Fifty Shades of Grey, and Minions.

Compton probably won't reach the mega million dollar hauls those films brought in, but its doing fine on its own. The film is already the highest grossing musical biopic in history, overtaking the Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon fronted Johnny Cash flick Walk the Line.

Compton also holds the distinction of being the biggest R-rated release ever. After 3 weeks in theatres it's brought in around $134 million domestically according to boxofficemojo.

It wasn't all good news for music based films this week though. Zach Efron's EDM fueled romp We Are Your Friends bombed at the box office during its opening weekend.

The film, which stars the High School Musical alum as an aspiring DJ looking to hit it big, took home just $1.8 million from 2,333 screens according to Variety.

The mark is the lowest ever for a wide release from a major studio. The film was being pegged for a debut hovering around $8 million, but even that modest figure proved out of reach.

Variety says that Warner Bros. paid $2 million for the rights to the film, so it won't be taking that big of a hit.
