It's about time Dirk Gently returns to TV!
The main protagonist in Douglas Adams' 1987 book 'Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency' will be getting a second chance at starring in his own BBC TV series. However, like the plot about his missing cat, there is a plot twist: Dirk Gently's new show will air on BBC America.
The BBC4 series 'Dirk Gently' was aired in 2010, with Stephen Mangan playing the self-proclaimed holistic detective. It also starred Darren Boyd as MacDuff, Lisa Jackson as Gently's receptionist Janice Pearce and Helen Baxendale as Susan Harmison.
The series received great reviews and drew several viewers. However it was cancelled after only four episodes.
Will the new 'Dirk Gently' series be different from the first one?
The new adaptation will be getting a fresh new take, since it will be written by Max Landis, who has previously worked on the screenplay for 'Chronicle' and 'American Ultra.'
According to IGN, the series is being described as "an anthology series set in the unexpected world of the hyper, absurd, ridiculous Dirk Gently. With an utterly fresh, comically self-aware tone, this series is equally sincere in its danger, humor, violence, and drama."
There are several speculations that the new 'Dirk Gently' series will be based in the US, however BBC America had no comment about the relocation.
Dirk Gently, whose real name is Svlad Cjelli but also goes by the pseudonym Dirk Cjelli, was created by Douglas Adams after the Doctor Who serial he was working on was cancelled. 'Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency' started out as the serial 'Shada,' but Adams removed all of the Doctor Who elements from the story to produce the novel.
In addition to the first book, Dirk Gently has continued his unusual investigative skills in another Douglas Adams book, 'The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul.' In the unofficial sequel, Dirk Gently finds himself up against the Norse God of Thunder and dealing with a growing refrigerator deity.
