Ava DuVernay ‘Black Panther’: Will ‘Selma’ Director Be Behind Camera For Marvel’s Wakanda Superhero?

The recent film "Avengers: Age of Ultron" already teased the existence of Wakanda, the country ruled by King T'Challa, also a superhero in his free time, during a random mention; now, months after Chadwick Boseman was confirmed for the role in "Captain America: Civil War," it seems like the character's stand-alone film has its found its director in Ava DuVernay's "Black Panther."

Although executives at Disney and Marvel haven't confirmed or denied anything, rumors are now all over the web saying that it'll be Ava DuVernay's "Black Panther" in theaters in 2018, fresh off her critical acclaim from the Martin Luther King biopic "Selma."

The first report that Ava DuVernay as "Black Panther" director came from website MCUexchange, as they claim that Marvel Studios has officially hired the Golden Globe nominee in secret to direct the upcoming film, one of the last films of the Marvel Phase 3, set for a 2018 release.

According to AV Club, the rumor of Ava DuVernay's "Black Panther" directing is no more than that, as the original source has no official confirmation, but it's still been said in the past that DuVernay may be joining the directors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a list that includes Kenneth Branagh, Jon Favreau, Peyton Reed and "Firefly" creator Joss Whedon.

It's been said that Marvel had been considering the director for two possible projects due to her proven and interesting take on minorities: either the Ava DuVernay "Black Panther" job, which would see her take on the first African-American superhero, or "Captain Marvel," which would see her tackle the first female superhero with her own film.

The Guardian reports that, if Ava DuVernay's "Black Panther" job is actually true, it'd be part of a grander scheme in Marvel Studios to create a more diverse MCU, including Idris Elba as Heimdall in the "Thor" movies.
