The earthquakes that struck Nepal in April, which left the country with 8,300 casualties included a national sports coach and sports journalist, affecting the sports industry in the country.
The sports journalist, who was a member of the Nepal Sports Journalist Forum, was one of the recovered dead during the search and rescue operation after the catastrophe. The journalist was identified as 31-year-old press officer Suman Bomjan, who was found dead in his own house.
Keshav Lal Shrestha, an esteemed sports coach was also among those who died in the earthquake. He was trapped inside his rented home. Those who are related to the late volleyball coach expressed their grief over his death.
Coach and player during the 1982 Asian Games player Jeetendra Bahadur Chand shared how Shrestha worked as a coach.
"He was a dedicated and experienced coach. He was a dedicated and experienced coach whose demise is a great loss for sports in Nepal," according to Chand.
Besides losing prominent sports fgures, various sports teams are also in disarray because of the earthquake.
For instance, the country's national cricket team will be having a hard time practicing and preparing for an international tournament in June.
However, according to Coach Pubundu Dassanayake, they will continue training for the World Twenty20 tournament despite the present condition of Nepal.
"We're not going to give up. The tournament is vital for the future of Nepal's cricket and we plan to go to India for preparations." stated Dassanayake.
Dassanayake believes that they can give the nation an inspiration if they do well.
"None of our players are harmed physically, but they have suffered mental scars, just like any other person. A good performance by the cricketers will boost the morale of the country." he added.
The country was also assigned to host the Asian weightlifting championships in July, which would be participated by 30 Asian countries. However, because of the tragedy, the organizers decided to change the host country and venue of the upcoming competition.
The Nepal Weightlifting Association will instead organize the event ni 2016, giving them enough time to recover and prepare.
Nepal was first plagued by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in April, and then a few weeks later with a 7.3 magnitude one. Survivors are currently taking refuge in Dasharath Stadium in Kathmandu.
