Benedict Cumberbatch ‘EastEnders’: ‘Sherlock’ Star Wants To Join Another BBC Show!

It seems like every day there's news of the "Sherlock" star getting cast in a new movie or releasing one soon, and he's certainly one of the most popular actors in Hollywood at the moment, if not the most popular - but it seems like for Benedict Cumberbatch "EastEnders" is the next stop!

Currently on the role to the Oscars for his portrayal of Alan Turing in the 2014 biopic "The Imitation Game" (though his friend Eddie Redmayne is the one heavily tipped to win, for his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in "The Theory of Everything"), it seems Benedict Cumberbatch's "EastEnders" future is what's keeping the actor awake at night!

For those who are less familiar with British television, "EastEnders" is a long-running soap opera from BBC1, centered on the residents of Albert Square, which is a Victorian style block. Ever since 1985, it has been one of the most popular shows in the United Kingdom, and features a lot of very strong families - also, it seems like Benedict Cumberbatch's "EastEnders" dreams feature him at least visiting the famous block!

According to Metro, though, the whole thing may have been in jest for the man who's about to play the title character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film "Doctor Strange", as Benedict Cumberbatch's "EastEnders" comments came as he was in the red carpet for the BAFTA Awards last Sunday.

"It's EastEnders next!" said the actor last Sunday, according to Closer Online, admitting to being a huge fan of the soap opera. He also mentioned he's good friends with Jessie Wallace, one of the show's stars, and even with her fiancé Tim Arnold, who's currently on the British The Voice.

The Huffington Post reports that the actor really would like to have a role in the show, but he says that his "abysmal" attempts at a Cockney accent might prevent him from being convincing - so maybe Benedict Cumberbatch's "EastEnders" appearance won't be coming any time soon.
