The hack carried out by the hacker group the Lizard Squad has brought down the Sony PlayStation Now network and in turn made its users unable to access their games starting Christmas Eve until the next few days. To compensate its users for the outages, especially those who had their PlayStation 4 console as a present, Sony has come up with ways to make it up to its user.
Starting Jan. 1, Sony will be offering 10 percent discount on the PlayStation Store. The discount will cover games, TV shows as well as movies. Sony said that this move is a gesture to compensate its users in the outages after the denial of service attack brought down its servers. Additionally, Eric Lempel of Sony Network Entertainment posted on his blog that PlayStation Plus members who were already members as well a free trial user during the time of the outages will receive a five day extension on their membership.
Based on the comments in the PlayStation community, majority of its users were relieved to know that Sony has finally made its move to compensate the inconvenience that its users experience during the outages, however some are still angry at Sony for the slow response time in fixing the issue. Some are just mad that Sony, despite its large commercial market, is still vulnerable to these hacking attacks. One user comment said "What I would like, more than anything else, is an explanation from Sony about how and why this will never happen again. Use the money to strengthen and diversify the network infrastructure so these types of attacks become harder to make and easier to recover from."
The hack on Sony and Microsoft was only lifted when internet tycoon Kim Dotcom stepped in and decided to buy out the hackers. Kim offered vouchers to his online cloud storage service Mega. The vouchers costs $99 each and Kim manage to hand out around 3000 of these vouchers. Doing the math, the buyout could net the hacker group a massive profit of around $297,000!
