1795 Time Capsule- Massachusetts State House uncovered a part of history when crew working at the water maintenance accidentally found a 1795 time capsule that contains century old artifacts on Thursday afternoon. The 1795 time capsule found was buried by known patriots Samuel Adams, Paul Revere and William Scollay.
The 1795 time capsule was concealed in the cornerstone of the Massachusetts State House during the year when it was first built, CNN reports. The capsule made of copper or tin and measures about 5-by-7 inches revealed artifacts dated as early as the 1600s.
"It's exciting," Massachusetts Secretary of State Bill Galvin said in an interview. "The history of Massachusetts is the history of America, in many respects. We know it's coins and Paul Revere plates, but what condition they are in is the question. "
Based on the records of Gov. Deval Patrick's administration the 1795 time capsule was mortared into the cornerstone following a ceremony in the State House in 1795. The capsule contains 1600s coins, Paul Revere plate, newspapers, and title page of the Massachusetts Colony records, according to Los Angeles Times.
Secretary of State Bill Galvin stated that it was the first time that the 1795 time capsule was uncovered. It was unearthed in 1855 following emergency repairs in the State House. He added that the 1795 and 1855 exhumed of the 1795 time capsule were all recorded.
The 1795 time capsule were recovered by the workers at the State House with the help of a conservator from the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. The capsule will be taken for x-ray examinations to ensure that all the artifacts are in good condition.
Galvin noted that the plaster was intact and examinations will reveal whether contents are safe inside. Galvin who is also heading the state's historical commission added that the details on the contents of the 1795 time capsule will be disclosed some time next week.
The 1795 time capsule is believed to be the oldest time capsule unearthed from Massachusetts State House. Three months ago, a time capsule was also found in the Old State House located half a mile from the new State House. The time capsule was unearthed from a lion head statue that was placed in 1901.
It contains photographs of public officials and workers, a piece wood of the original lion statue, memorabilia from Boston newspapers and an envelope with title, "A message to posterity from the daily newspapers at City Hall.
In September, before the 1795 time capsule was exhumed, and the Old State House recovered the time capsule from the lion's head, the Bostonian Society created a time capsule for 2014. It includes modern objects that will be valuable for future discovery.
The 2014 time capsule created by the Bostonian society includes the newest version of the "Foreign Relations of the United States," an Apple iPhone 5, Red Sox tickets, 2013 Boston Marathon medal, and a fragment of a 1713 brick from the building.
The 2014 time capsule was placed in the head of the lion statue in the Old State House in Nov.23
