In Colorado, A 13 Pounds Baby Is Born: ‘They Opened Their Eyes Like They’ve Never Seen A Baby Like That’

Colorado, 13 Pounds Baby - It happened this week that Alisha Hernandez gave birth to Mia Yasmin Garcia. The surprising detail is that the baby was weighing 13 pounds!

Mia was born through cesarean section in Alamosa, Colorado on Monday. She was weighing 13 pounds and 13 ounces, according to ABC News.

It was the Alamosa Valley Courier who reported that the newborn was flown to Denver, to a hospital because she was facing low glucose levels and also, trouble breathing.

Apparently, the doctor told the mother of the 13 pounds baby that she should expect a 7 pound baby. So, it's more than shocking that this number got basically doubled.

"They were like whoa! They opened their eyes like they've never seen a baby like that before," said Francisco Garcia, Mia's father about the hospital staff's reaction after seeing the newborn baby.

And hospital officials later reported that Mia is indeed the biggest baby they have ever treated so far with her 13 pounds and 13 ounces. Still, this isn't the case in the rest of the USA.

A 2013 study showed that there is a percentage of 15 to 25 increase in babies having fetal macrosomia, which is the case when they weigh from 8 to 13 ounces or more. This has been happening over the last two to three decades.

Dr. Shieva Ghofrany, an OBGYN with Stamford Hospital told the Huffington Post that it is a definite fact that babies have been coming bigger and the increase of macrosomia among them is a concerning one.

Bigger babies are harder to deliver and high baby weights like the case of Mia with 13 pounds could present problems not only for the baby but for the mother as well.

Macrosomia seems to be caused by diabetes or obesity in the mother's case, but there could also be other factors.

Also the baby recorded with the biggest weight has been not Mia with her 13 pounds in Colorado, but Anna Bates, who weighed 23 pounds, back in 1879.
