The "Ex Machina" trailer is one of the most fun things that have happened to movies lately - or, at least, since last week's leak of the "The Avengers: Age of Ultron" teaser!
The "Ex Machina" trailer shows fans of the genre a piece not unlike last year's "Her," in the sense that it seems to imply a love story between a sentient program and a human, in a not too faraway future.
However, unlike "Her," the "Ex Machina" trailer shows that the android in question, also a woman, is not just the voice of a software or program, but rather a full-grown android with an artificial body, plus the ability to feel.
The film stars Domhnall Gleeson, who played Bill Weasley in the "Harry Potter" films and will have a role in the upcoming "Star Wars: Episode VII." It will also feature his co-star in a galaxy far, far away, Oscar Isaac, in a strange love triangle between two men and an android woman, played by Swedish actress Alicia Vikander.
On her part, Vikander was in Joe Wright's "Anna Karenina" a few years back, as well as co-starring with Benedict Cumberbatch in last year's "The Fifth Estate," a biopic about WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
As website Cinema Blend puts it, the done-to-death narrative of the robot that overtakes the human race is nowhere to be found in the "Ex Machina" trailer, but rather it's more a complicated, inter-species love triangle. From the trailer, it can be suggested that Vikander's character, Ava, is nothing to be afraid about.
The film was written and directed by Alex Garland, a veteran writer of novels and screenplays that's taking his very first turn as a director for this project. His writing has become famous for films like the zombie film "28 Days Later" and its sequel, as well as "Sunshine" - plus, he wrote the novel the 1999 Danny Boyle and Leonardo Di Caprio film "The Beach" was based on.
