The officer whose identity has not yet been released to the public, was off duty and was travelling on the Concord, California road when she ran over a bag. Initially, she assumed the bag was full of rubbish. She went out to look and found that it contained multiple $100 notes. In total, the sum of money was $120,000. The road was deserted and no person was on the road. She could easily have just picked the money and gone home with it, but she didn't. She chose the virtuous path and the officer returns $120,000.
A man who reported the loss of the bags was later found and the sum of money was returned to its rightful owner. The man was extremely grateful for having found the money, as it was his life savings.
The officer, who will later be recognized in a private ceremony, will also be handed a commendation for her service.
Speaking on an interview, she said that virtue was something she tried to learn and practice every day. "There was no one on that street after I had come back, nobody would have known," she said. "But that's what determines a person's integrity, it's what you do when nobody is looking."
The California Highway Patrol spokesman John Fransen did not release the name of the officer. However, it is reported that the officer has been in the service for twenty years. The officer was driving on Concord Boulevard on September 17 when she found the two tire marked bags on the road. There are no details on how the 31 year old owner of the money lost it.
