Like most of the details concerning Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the origins of the film's new two opposing sides have been a closely guarded secret.
The original trilogy pit the menacing Galactic Empire against the rag-tag Rebel Alliance and now, some 30 years later, The Force Awakens continues the conflict with the former now known as the First Order and the latter known as The Resistance.
We'll most likely have to wait until the movie to find out how exactly the two sides got to where they are but we did get some new information on the status of the Resistance courtesy of Oscar Isaac.
In an interview with i09, Isaac, who plays the Resistance Starfighter pilot Poe Dameron in the new film, described how the situation has changed for the Rebels since the events of Return of the Jedi.
"Just think about the words," said Isaac. "One is to rebel against, so it's an offensive action. Resisting is on the defensive. So I think the big difference is that [The Resistance] is even more cornered."
He also told i09 that "There's less of them" and "It's slightly less organized," which indicates that our heroes may be in even worse shape than during A New Hope.
It looks like the death of Emperor Palpatine and destruction of the second Death Star weren't as decisive a blow as we may have thought in the past.
Disney and Lucasfilm have attempted to bridge the gap between the old trilogy and The Force Awakens through comic books and novels like Star Wars: Shattered Empire, and Lost Stars.
Additionally, the recently released video game Star Wars: Battlefront features a 'Battle of Jakku' DLC which takes place in the ruined desert landscape we've been seeing in the trailers.
