Justin Bieber's 'Purpose' Breaks Spotify Records

The results for Spotify's sales showdown isn't set to be revealed until next week, but the Canadian pop star Justin Bieber, who decided to release his album on the same date as the British boy band One Direction's Made in the A.M., has a clear as day lead according to a recent survey by Nielsen Music.

This doesn't mean that One Direction's statistics are poor though, but Bieber shattered their 106 million global streams with 205 million of his and 77 million more in the United States, breaking the previous record of Canadian R&B singer The Weeknd's Beauty Behind Madness. Both 1D and Bieber have been aggressively promoting their new albums, appearing in the most trending shows like Ellen, Today, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Good Morning America.

The Biebs currently has 15 tracks on Spotify's Global Top 50 chart which is led by his hit song Sorry at the number 1 spot, and One Direction has 9 of their tracks with Drag Me Down as their highest-charting at number 9.

Despite all the comparisons that have been consistent around the web following Bieber's snapchat where he said that One Direction should be afraid since they're releasing fresh albums on the same day, he revealed that it was only him being 'playful'. That supposedly 'playful' remark caused a feud between two fandoms over at Twitter, each defending their favourites, who are currently two of the most dominant acts in the popular music scene.

Purpose is Bieber's first album in three years, consisting of 13 tracks, all of which are associated with his reflection on his life in the eyes of the public, as observed by the fans who have watched him grow from 'Kidrauhl' to who he is now.

The final sales count for both Purpose and Made in the A.M. are expected on Monday.
