Macklemore & Ryan Lewis walked away with four awards at the 2014 Grammys, but the rapper himself took some time to express his feelings about one win in particular.
According to Us Weekly, Macklemore texted fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar to apologize for beating him in the Best Rap Album category. Also in the category were albums by Drake, Jay Z and Kanye West. The "Thrift Shop" rapper sent a text to Lamar, telling him that he believe his album should taken home the prize.
"You got robbed. I wanted you to win. You should have," Macklemore wrote in the message,. "It's weird and sucks that I robbed you.
Macklemore later posted the sent text message on Instagram with a length message explaining his feelings
"My text to Kendrick after the show. He deserved best rap album. I'm honored and completely blown away to win anything much less 4 Grammys. But in that category, he should have won IMO, And that's taking nothing away from The Heist. Just giving GKMC its proper respect," he said. "With that being said, thank you to the fans. You're the reason we were on that stage tonight. And to play Same Love on that platform was a career highlight. The greatest honor of all. That's what this is about. Progress and art. Thank you. #grammysFollow. "
Lamar's album "Good Kid, M.A.A.D." was reportedly expected to win big during this year's Grammys, especially in the Best Rap Album category, Us Weekly reported. Instead, the rapper left the award show empty-handed.
In an interview with the Source magazine, Macklemore expressed similar views on who he thought would win at the Grammys.
"I think [best rap album] should go to Kendrick ... I understand why hip-hop would feel like Kendrick got robbed [if he didn't win]," Macklemore told the magazine.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis also won Grammys for Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song and Best New Artist. The group made Grammy history when they performed a mass on-air wedding that included same-sex couples officiated by Queen Latifah.
The social issue protest played out in front of 28.5 million viewers, the second largest television audience since 1993, according to preliminary Nielsen Company ratings. The "ceremony" brought tears to the eyes of stars like Keith Urban and Katy Perry, who both applauded the performance.
"It's just beyond, it's the pinnacle, it's the apex," producer Lewis said afterward of the night, according to the Associated Press. "So to be up here and more importantly to be able to celebrate 'Same Love' and have the marriages onstage - my sister getting married tonight as well - was phenomenal. So, amazing."
