Pixar's Inside Out might have played with our emotions when it hit the theaters last June. Though Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger and Disgust are the only five emotions that were featured in the movie, there are other emotions that almost starred in the film.
Before it came down to five, other emotions such as Irritation, Pride, Envy, Greed, Gloom, Despair, Depression and Love were considered to play roles in the film but were not picked. There were 26 emotions that were being eyed to be casted before trimming them down until five made the cut. Unusual yet interesting emotions such as Schadenfreude (the happiness it brings to a person by seeing someone suffer) and Ennui (the feeling of boredom or discontentment surfacing from a situation or state of non-excitement) also made the list. Some positive emotions such as pride and hope almost made the cut but failed to get slots at the end.
Peter Docter, director of Inside Out, talking about the process of deciding what emotions should be included in the film said, "We thought that this is science, there is going to be one correct answer to the number of emotions. But some (scientists) said 17, another said four. A couple of scientists said zero, that emotions are sort of an illusion. There was no real unity. That was good because we were able to decide for ourselves." Eventually the list was cut down to make the story line uncomplicated. Though a lot of the emotions were not included, the director and staff concluded with the final five since Riley's (the main character) attributes were already exemplified in them.
Docter recalling the experience of making the final decision stated, "I just remember sitting at my desk and saying, 'OK, I'm going to have to make a call. Which emotions feel instinctively like the ones appropriate for the story of this girl? And that's how we came up with the five that we have."
When the five voice actors gave life to their characters, Docter and his associates knew that they made the right decision for coming out with the final five emotions since it was a perfect match.
Though only five emotions hit the big screen, some that were cut from the list made their way out in a special Inside Out Blu-ray/DVD edition available on Tuesday at Target.
