Next year's "Suicide Squad," the film which will mark Jared Leto's debut as the Joker in the DC movie universe, is one of the most highly awaited films in recent times, and the actor's portrayal of the role has no little to do with this, as the "Suicide Squad" Joker will be the first live-action portrayal since Heath Ledger's.
Leto has some big shoes to fill after Ledger's final role, where he won the Academy Award posthumously in a historic first for comic book adaptations under Christopher Nolan's direction - but so far, the "Suicide Squad" Joker looks more than promising.
According to Wired, Leto, himself an Oscar winner after his portrayal of a transgender HIV patient on "The Dallas Buyers Club," the actor recently opened up about what it was like to play the "Suicide Squad" Joker, a task that hasn't been easy for other actors before - and which occupied a lot of energy for Leto in particular, a famous follower of Method acting.
"There was definitely a period of ... detachment," Leto told Empire Magazine speaking about his "Suicide Squad" Joker process. "I took a pretty deep dive. But this was a unique opportunity and I couldn't imagine doing it another way. It was fun, playing those psychological games. But at the same time it was very painful, like giving birth out of my prick hole."
Comic Book Movie reports that the 43 year-old actor even considered giving the interview in full "Suicide Squad" Joker character, but ultimately thought it over better after realizing that "the Joker would probably just say, 'F**k you,' and hang up."
In the past few months, Leto's co-stars in the film have already spoken wonders about his portrayal of the role, including Will Smith claiming he only met the Joker and never Leto, while Margot Robbie explained Leto had gifted her with a live rat as part of their on-screen relationship.
