Meg Ryan Trades Hollywood Spotlight For Quiet Life in Downtown Manhattan

What has Meg Ryan been up to lately?

In this week's issue of People Magazine, the 51-year-old actress gave details of her new life outside the Hollywood spotlight. Ryan, who was once considered the box office golden gal, has ditched the cameras and glam for a more subdued lifestyle in New York City.

"Living in New York makes you different." Ryan's friend, writer Della Ephron, told People. "Los Angeles is just about movies. New York is about so much more than that, and so is Meg."

Ryan currently lives downtown Manhattan with her adopted daughter Daisy, 8, and her boyfriend of nearly three years, rocker John Mellencamp. People reported Ryan began to pull back from life in the spotlight after her divorce from husband of 10 years, Dennis Quad, in 2001. The divorce was a result of both partners' infidelity.

In 2008, Ryan opened up about her affair with Russell Crowe on the set of "Proof of Life" in 2000, telling InStyle Magazine that it was painful but liberating.

"So this is what it feels like to be the scarlet woman. Oh! I'm having that experience now!," she told the magazine. "It was also incredibly liberating. Now I was utterly free. I didn't have to care about what people thought. I have gotten to do what I guess I secretly wanted to do. Be totally under the radar and live my life."

Ryan, who was formerly known as the queen of romantic comedies, claim to fame with movies like "When Harry Met Sally" and "Sleepless in Seattle".

The People Magazine issue hits newsstands Friday.
