Without a doubt, one of the most heart-wrenching moments in 2014 films was when Groot sacrificed himself for his team in the first installment of "Guardians of the Galaxy," and the world breathed once more after it was shown in the very last scene that he'd survived - and now, the tree-like creature is officially part of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" cast!
James Gunn, the director of the first film and the person doing the writing and directing for the 2017 sequel, has recently confirmed that "Fast and Furious" actor Vin Diesel, who voiced Groot in the 2014 blockbuster, will definitely be back for more in the sequel.
According to Screen Crush, while it was already assumed that Diesel would be part of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" cast, it wasn't until earlier this week that Gunn confirmed it, as the famously social media-savvy filmmaker took to Twitter and Facebook to answer fan questions.
As Slash Film reports, considering the fact that by the end of the film Groot is basically a very tiny dancing tree, there was a theoretical possibility that the "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" cast would need a much younger voice instead of Diesel's grave tone, so another actor could have been cast in the role; however, considering Groot is an alien type of tree, maybe those grow much faster than the ones on Earth, so there's that.
Besides, it's a comic book adaptation, things are less restrictive than they are in real life.
While many argue that Diesel's voice acting is unnecessary considering the character only has the ability to say three words ("I am Groot") and the character's motion capture saw another actor play the character, Cinema Blend argues that now it's impossible to deny Diesel's voice range in the first film, even if he did just other three words (plus that heartbreaking "we are Groot" near the end).
In any case, expect more "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" cast news soon!
