Windows 10 Hits 75 Million Downloads Milestone

Congratulations to Microsoft for hitting 75 million downloads of Windows 10 in just under a month. These numbers are very encouraging as the tech giant tries to pick up the pieces from its bug-ridden Windows 8 and 8.1 days which were totally unprepared for its use on mobile devices.

Microsoft hopes to continue this upward trend that was debuted by the 14 million downloads consumers made within the first 24 hours of its release. It is apparent that making Windows 10 a free upgrade to its users also made it into a hugely popular choice. In contrast, Windows 8 needed six months to reach 100 million licensees, The Financial Review reports.

This is important as Microsoft is trying to get back in the game, once an easy feat, but with iOS and Android in the picture, Microsoft has had to work extra hard to make their software easy to use on mobile platforms.

With PC sales shrinking in the past years, and the trend is expected to continue in this way, Microsoft's hand is being forced to cater to the mobile market. 2015 marks the fourth year of declining PC sales, as the Times of India reports.

On the other hand, PC makers are pinning their hopes on Windows 10 to provide immersive experiences for consumers to hopefully get them back to their old pole position. That might be possible if the numbers can predict anything useful.

For instance, Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft executive, said in a tweet that, "even some devices manufactured in 2007 have upgraded to Windows 10." If this boost in consumer interest is sustained, then the PC can still remain in a position of relevance.

Time will tell if Windows 10 is competitive enough to take on Android and iOS in the mobile game. But positive reviews on Windows 10 on both PC and mobile platforms make the future of Microsoft a lot peachier compared to the relative failure of Windows 8 and 8.1.
