Samsung has given Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge owners the chance to own the Gear VR Innovator Edition of the tech by simply adding an extra $200. The virtual reality device is the first of its kind that has been made available to the public.
Engadget reports that the Gear VR is not that perfect but can perform many functions just like the Oculus Rift. The headset has a touch pad and motion sensors that are more sophisticated than that of Google Cardboard. It features a volume control and a back button that is uniquely designed.
The virtual reality device is powered by the users' smartphone which can be charged even while using the headset with the use of a USB port. The feature is not present in the first generation of the Gear VR. The new version requires to be clipped on smartphones to fully make its sound system function including its display and computer system.
The ultra-dense 576 pixels per inch of the Samsung Galaxy S6 helps the gear display quality images one inch away from the users' face. The VR gives stereoscopic visions with the aid of its two magnifiers.
However, users' cannot use glasses while using the headset. Just like the problem faced by the Oculus Rift, the device is disorienting to use at first. Unlike the latter, the new gear does not cause side effects like dizziness and nausea which will still vary depending on the user.
The Gear VR which converts 2D images to 3D makes movie viewing even more realistic. The second generation VR was designed to be partnered with the flagship Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge smartphones of the Korean based company.
The latest Gear VR headsets only work with specific Samsung smartphones. Users are expecting for the third-gen headset to available for any smartphones. The said gear will be launched together with the tech company's upcoming Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+.
