Twitter Removes Character Limit On Direct Messaging Service

Twitter has announced that it has removed the limit of 140 characters on its direct messages between users of the service. Users of the social media site are now allowed to write longer direct messages to express their feelings and opinions. The move will give the users liberty to public expression in private conversations.

The product manager for direct messages of Twitter Sachin Agarwal states that, "Our users will now have the flexibility to write longer and express themselves in a more natural and comfortable way."

"Today's change is another big step towards making the private side of Twitter even more powerful and fun," Agarwal added.

Users are now allowed to write as much as 10,000 characters of content like Facebook, which make Twitter seem eager to compete with the largest social networking site. The update which is dedicated to reach wider audiences was first announced in June.

The tech company is committed in providing a really great space for its users where they can communicate without limitations. However, public tweets are still bounded by the 140-character limit.

The move is part of the company's plan to offer services that are easier to navigate and more useful. For how many months, Twitter has been working on a project called Project Lightning which focuses on the user's live events. To attract new users, the company is adding apps similar to WhatsApp and Snapchat.

The new update will be experienced by users on their Android and Apple mobile devices. In the coming weeks, the change will be rolled out globally by the company.

Twitter is determined to keep up with Facebook which is now the number one social networking site in the world. The latter has 1.44 billion active users each month while the former only has 316 million active users monthly. The huge difference is disadvantageous for Twitter in terms of attracting advertisers.
