Last week, rap icon Dr. Dre released his much awaited third studio album, 'Compton: A Soundtrack by Dr. Dre'. The album, Dre's first in nearly 15 years, was obviously the talk of the music world and social media last week thanks in no small part to the viral marketing campaign that came attached to it.
For most of the weekend, social media has been flooded with memes plastered with the 'Straight Outta...' logo. The marketing gimmick isn't actually intended for Dre's album, but another Dre backed project, the biopic 'Straight Outta Compton' which hits theatres August 17. The film chronicles the rise of N.W.A, the rap group that Dr. Dre founded together Ice Cube, Eazy-E, DJ Yella, and MC Ren during the 1980's.
Making a Compton meme is simple, just head over to straightouttasomewhere.com and type in whatever you like. The marketing stunt is similar to that of Music stars like Drake and Taylor Swift, who have both used meme generators to promote their albums on the internet.
Here are some of the best ones:
MMA star Ronda Rousey was on the receiving end of one as fellow fighter Cris 'Cyborg' Justino used the Compton template to challenge the UFC bantamweight champion to a fight:
Fellow rapper Meek Mill was also the subject of one. This an obvious jab at his feud with Drake.
