At the Television Critics Association's summer press tour, Fox announced that they have just ordered a new pilot from Empire creator Lee Daniels. Dubbed 'Star', the new program will be centered around the music industry and may feature cross overs with Daniels' other show, the Hip-Hop drama 'Empire.'
Vulture says that Star will 'trace the rise of a three-member, Atlanta-based female singing group trying to become superstars.'
The Hollywood Reporter adds that:
"The drama is set in Atlanta and revolves around three girls who come together to form a band and Star details their rise to the top in a challenging business. And while Empire is told from the point of view of music executives, Star will be told from the perspective of the artist."
The show gets its title from its main character. At the panel, Daniels gave some backstory on Star and her two other friends:
"Star is white and she is thrust into a world of blackness, she has a sister who is half black, Simone, and she has a best friend who is black, and they move to Atlanta to form a girls group."
The showrunner cited classic and contemporary female groups like The Supremes, TLC, and Destiny's Child as inspirations for the trio.
Fox Executive Dana Walden Star and Empire will exist in the same universe, but plans of potential intra-show plots are not the priority at the moment:
"It's not inconceivable that the two worlds could cross, but that's not Lee's intention," she said. "Perhaps down the line there will be some shared DNA, but not heading into the show."
While Star still has quite a ways to go before hitting the screen, Empire is gearing up for its second season which airs this September.
