After the nominees for MTV's Video Music Awards were announced earlier this week, many were shocked to see that "Anaconda," a clip that became a viral hit last year and turned its singer into a superstar, wasn't among the contenders for Video of the Year - a fact that ultimately caused an awkward Twitter exchange between Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift.
In the past, Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift have kept things friendly on stage and in social media, but as Minaj took to Twitter to complain about the VMA's racist standings on new videos, Swift took it to heart - and social media and news outlets reprimanded her for it.
According to The Independent, the supposed Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift feud started when the award nominations were announced, a fact that prompted the Trinitarian-born singer to call out how the music industry refuses to award talent from African-American women.
In one of the tweets, Minaj wrote that if her video had featured "women with very slim bodies," it would have been nominated for Video of the Year, and that's where the Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift Twitter feud started, as the "Bad Blood" singer took things personally.
"I've done nothing but love & support you. It's unlike you to pit women against each other," Swift tweeted, CNN reports, prompting the world to watch the exchange between Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift Twitter. "Maybe one of the men took your slot."
Surprised, Minaj went on to say she had never said Swift's name and that she couldn't have been "reading [her] tweets," as she exposed racism in the industry, also asking Swift to speak about this subject - and the "Shake it Off" singer tried to make amends by saying Minaj was invited to any stage she was in.
In the meantime, Twitter has been filled with comments against Swift for making it about her when Minaj was speaking about a race issue, and news outlets have followed suit, like HitFix's headline reading "Nicki Minaj calls out the VMAs for racism, Taylor Swift makes it all about her."
Hopefully, the entire Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift feud is just a misunderstanding!
