The company that provides on-demand streaming for movies and other videos will launch its very own original movie in October. Netflix has taken on the expertise of Director Cary Fukunaga to helm the "Beasts of No Nation". The movie will be released on October 16, 2015 through video streaming service and in select theatres across the nation, reports Reuters.
"Beasts of No Nation" stars British actor Idris Elba, a Golden Globe best actor winner.
Director Fukunaga is an Emmy Best Director winner for the TV series "True Detective" in HBO in 2014. His film credits include "Sin Nombre" and "Jane Eyre". He has also won a Best Director award in the Sundance Film Festival.
Netflix is rolling out the carpet for more big name artists in their next original movies. Adam Sandler is set to appear in four. One of these is "The Ridiculous Six" slated for release on December 11.
Brothers Mark and Jay Duplass will do four films for Netflix. Their tandem comprises the Duplass Brothers Productions behind films "The Puffy Chair", "Jeff who Lives at Home" and "The Do-Deca-Pentathlon".
In 2016, Netflix will stream "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend". It will also be shown in select theatres in China. It will be followed by "Pee-wee's Big Holiday".
Netflix is making this move towards creating original movies after their original series hit the mark with "Orange is the New Black" and "House of Cards", starring Kevin Spacey, both released last year. Last year, Netflix was nominated for the first time for the Academy Award for its documentary, "The Square". The same American-Egyptian documentary that garnered three wins at the Emmy Awards.
Netflix has 31.1 million subscribers in the US alone, 40 million worldwide. Within the year, it expects to gain subscribers in Portugal, Spain and Italy.
