Mid-Autumn Festival 2012 in NYC: A Guide for Where to Go

Mid-Autumn Festival is on September 30, 2012. Here are some great ideas for the family in order to experience this major holiday in New York City.

Tradition calls for eating moon cakes, a pastry that is made from red bean or lotus seed paste, and pay contained salted duck eggs. It is custom to present moon cakes to family and friends as presents.

Autumn Moon Cultural Festival and Children's Lantern Parade & 2nd China Week Cultural Festival is taking place this Sunday, September 30 from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Chinatown. The Better Chinatown Society hosts this annual event, where families enjoy cultural performances, arts and crafts, food vendors and participate in a lantern parade. Located at Sara D. Roosevelt Park, at Canal and Forsyth Streets. 

Autumn Moon Festival in Flushing on Sunday September 30 from 4-6 p.m., hosted by the New York Chinese Cultural Center at the Queens Botanic Garden (43-50 Main Street near Dahlia Avenue). There will be moon cakes, arts and crafts, cultural performances and the Queens garden. Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for children ages 3 and up, free for kids under 3.

Autumn Moon Festival on Staten Island, located at New York Chinese Scholar's Garden (1000 Richmond Terrace) on Sunday, September 30 from 4-8 p.m. Chinese lanterns will adorn Snug Harbor, while Chinese dance and music, martial arts and cooking demos, calligraphy lessons, storytelling, food and crafts entertain. Admission is $10 for adults, $6 for students, free for children under 5.

Museum of Chinese in America is holding its Mid-Autumn Moon Festival Family Day, where Chinese Theater Works is presenting "Chang-Er Flies to the Moon." The show tells the ancient story of Chang-Er and the archer Ho Yi using shadow puppets. Admission is $7, $4 for students and 65+.
