Google Launches News Lab That Sharpens Journalism Skills

Google launched an online lab on Monday called the News Lab, where Internet Age reporting skills can be learned and sharpen journalists.

In a blog post, lab director Steve Grove, said, the News Lab's mission  is for journalists and entrepreneurs to collaborate and apply technology innovations in reporting news.

Lab director Steve Grove stated: "From Maps to YouTube to Fusion Tables to Earth to Search, we offer many tools that newsrooms can use in their reporting and storytelling," Grove also said, "Now, journalists around the world can access tutorials on these products created specifically for newsrooms."

Lessons in research, reporting, distribution, and using analytics tools are offered in the News Lab home page.

It's billed as a global effort when News Lab was launched. The teams  come from Britain, France, Germany and the United States.

The News Lab website also has a Data section where when Google Trends is used it will showcase some of the best visualizations of data-driven journalism across the globe. As part of the recent update of Google Trends, it now has a real-time data and it can also incorporate data that are collected from data journalists and newsrooms around the world.

"As both the media landscape and technology continue to evolve, we believe we can create a more informed world if technologists and journalists work together," Grove stated.

Also last week, YouTube announced their project "Newswire" - an eyewitness video and a separated video project related to social justice and human rights.

A blog post from the Google-owned video sharing service, stated: YouTube Newswire will have a partnership with the social news group Storyful: "a curated feed of the most newsworthy eyewitness videos of the day, which have been verified by Storyful's team of editors."

With the Newswire, journalists can be provided with an invaluable resource to discover news video around major events, and also, eyewitness video can be highlighted that it can offer a new perspective on the important news stories.
