Tiger Woods fired an opening round 80 at the 2015 US open at Chambers Bay. The score puts him 10 shots over par and near dead last in the standings at 152 out of 156 competitors. To make matters worse Woods was outperformed by 15 year old amateur golfer Cole Hammer who finished three shots above him. It's another disappointing showing this season for the free falling Woods.
Woods' nightmare round consisted of 8 bogeys and 1 triple bogey. It's the fourth worst performance Woods has ever golfed in his career and by far his worst showing at the US open, a tournament which he has won three times previously.
"I'm not very happy, that's for sure," said Woods. It was a tough day. I got off to a bad start and then just couldn't quite get it turned around. It's one of those things, just got to work through it. I'm trying as hard as I can to do it, and for some reason I just can't get the consistency that I'd like to have out there.I fought, I fought hard. And that was my number. I couldn't grind out any harder than that. So that's just the way I played and unfortunately it was a high number today."
On Twitter, golf analyst Justin Ray put into perspective just how bad Woods' recent performances have been:
"Rounds in 80s in Tiger's pro career 1996-2014 - 1 in 1,107 rounds. 2015 - 3 in 15 rounds"
ESPN said that Woods walked around the tournament in a 'zombie-like stagger' looking lost and detached.
Fox Sports analyst and former world No. 1 Greg Norman had harsh words for the former World No. 1 saying he will never win a major again:
"I see a guy who is totally lost, he does not have a go-to shot," Norman said. "When you are a great player and you go through a bad spell, it is usually a minor adjustment you need to get your game back into place, but Tiger needs to make major adjustments."
