While there are places on Earth famous for their prehistoric paleontological findings (such as the Chinese city of Heyuan, famous for its dozens of dinosaur eggs found over the course of years and most recently at a construction site), there are many others that haven't ever had this type of discoveries - but now that doesn't include the dinosaur bone found in Washington!
Over the past few months, the world has witnessed some staggering historic discoveries before the dinosaur bone found in Washington state, such as the realization that the 45,000 year-old man made found years back is actually a mix between human and Neanderthal or the discovery of two mythical pre-Hispanic cities in Honduras.
Previously unknown to scientists, it seems like millions of years ago, dinosaurs walked around the coast of Seattle, as the dinosaur bone found in Washington state after millions of years shows yet another incredible discovery from history.
According to Time Magazine, the dinosaur bone found in Washington state is the first of its kind ever to be found in the region, and it's 80 million years old; it's a huge historic piece at 17 inches, and scientists have concluded that it's a fragment of a theropod's femur bone.
CBC reports that therapoda were two-legged dinosaurs that have been proven as being mostly carnivorous, and it's a range that includes the Tyrannosaurus Rex and the velociraptor, though the dinosaur bone found in Washington state is neither of these species.
Live Science reports that the first reports of the dinosaur bone were in April 2012, as scientists in the region noticed a fossilized bone embedded in marine rock when the tide was out in the San Juan Islands (just a ferry ride away from Seattle), and they contacted paleontology experts to study it.
"The rock there is tremendously hard, so it took them a full day to excavate it," said Christian Sidor, a co-author of the study that presented the bone. What was exposed on the surface really had no anatomy. I couldn't tell if it was a dinosaur, couldn't tell if it was a marine reptile, couldn't tell anything about it."
Now, the dinosaur bone found in Washington state is being exposed at the Burke Museum in Seattle!
