Michelle Obama Authors Cookbook: American Grown

If being the First Lady wasn't impressive enough, Michelle Obama has now earned the title of author. Her 271-page book, American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America, came out Tuesday..

The book features recipes for each season (including Mrs. Obama's personal technique for making apple cobbler). She also points out which dishes are favorites around the White House dinner table. According to the Huffington Post, photos of garden goodies -- and of Bo, the First Dog! -- and a map of the garden's growth over the years are included, too, along with stories of community gardens around the country, historical facts, and a tutorial on creating a compost bin. Mrs. Obama also includes some personal information in the book's pages, perhaps explaining why healthy living through nutrition is so important to her.

"It is definitely a passion, getting the kids in our country to eat healthy," she said recently when she appeared on Good Morning America to promote the book. In addition to crusading for healthy eating, she hopes to encourage people, especially the younger generations, to exercise. She started her "Let's Move" campaign to promote and improve physical fitness.

The book retails for $30, and the First Lady plans to donate all her proceeds to the National Park Foundation for programs that promote gardening and healthy eating. Some of the money will also be used to help maintain the White House garden.
