Fans of the "How I Met Your Mother" multiple Emmy Award-winning actor were thrilled to know that Neil Patrick Harris' Oscars hosting would be possible when it was first announced in 2014, but the response to the past ceremony was lukewarm as best, with many critics even considering him "embarrassing."
It's been often said that hosting such a big night as the Academy Awards is a thankless job, and Neil Patrick Harris' Oscars performance was living proof of this, as the actor failed to receive the accolades his work as Tony and Emmy Awards host had had in the past.
According to BBC News, the Academy Awards broadcast, which was live from the Dolby Theater last February 22, dropped 16 percent in ratings from last year's (in the popular show that saw host Ellen DeGeneres' epic Oscars selfie), to its lowest point in six years, and many blamed Neil Patrick Harris' Oscars hosting.
The actor, often a major presence in social media (particularly Twitter), has been mostly quiet in the social network over the past couple of weeks, after gloomily tweeting that the morning of the Academy Awards his phone had broken down and he should've taken it as "a sign" that Neil Patrick Harris' Oscars performance wouldn't go as well as planned.
According to USA Today, now the "Doogie Howser, M.D." doesn't seem too keen on repeating Neil Patrick Harris' Oscar experience, as he said it put strain on his family and himself, and he wasn't sure he'd be able to take it again, saying there was a lot of rehearsal and time involved to little satisfaction in the end, after his performance got mixed reviews.
"I don't know that my family nor my soul could take it," said the actor to The Huffington Post, giving an interview about Neil Patrick Harris' Oscars performance. "It's a beast. It was fun to check off the list, but for the amount of time spent and the understandable opinionated response, I don't know that it's a delightful balance to do every year or even again."
