After leaking massive internal information from Sony Pictures, the hacking collective Guardians of Peace is now moving its target towards media organizations according to a bulletin posted by the Federal Bureau of Investigations. The bulletin was posted last Dec 24, that the hacker group is now mounting a massive attack on unnamed media organization.
A spokesperson from the FBI has confirmed that a bulletin was issued regarding upcoming cyber-attacks by the Guardians of Peace. Unfortunately no further detail was added, especially which media organization will be targeted and when the attack will commence. The spokesperson added that the information came from an informer in the private sector and it added that the attack might just be a speculation and no credible information has come to light whether the attack will happen or not.
The FBI bulletin also mentioned a message posted over the Internet mocking the investigation being carried out by the FBI and the media organization with regards to the Sony Pictures hack. Rumors around the internet are quick to point that the CNN might the media organization the Guardians of Peace are currently planning to attack.
Trevor Timm, executive director of the Freedom of the Press Foundation, said that "While it's hard to tell how legitimate the threat is, if a news organization is attacked in the manner Sony was, it could put countless sensitive sources in danger of being exposed- or worse."
On its initial investigations, the FBI along with the White House that the North Korean government has something to do with the hack on Sony. An allegation quickly shunned by the North Korea, however further investigations of the FBI had led them to believe that the North Korean's might have hired out external contractor to do the job for them. The Sony Pictures hack has exposed massive private documents comprising of employee information, unreleased movie scripts and salaries of executives. According to the Guardians of Peace, they carried out the attack in their attempt to suppress the release of the movie "The Interview", a movie that mocks the assassination of the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
