"Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" is the third and actually the last Hobbit, but despite that fact the movie maintains to be on top among other movies in which it accumulated $90.6M over the five-day weekend. The said film is on top of the movie "Night at the Museum" and the film "Annie" to its runner up position only.
There are three movie releases battled on weekend trying to be on the top spot, but it was the "Hobbit" who did it! The third Hobbit took about $56.2M just this weekend according to the estimate of the studio. The film is being released on Dec. 17 on 3,000 movie theaters. Since its release it already collected $90.6M.
According to Paul Dergarabedian, Box Office analyst, "This weekend marks the triumphant beginning to the end to this incredible franchise, which has been so consistent for over a decade since 'Lord of the Rings. It's rare to see this kind of audience excitement, which has not diminished one bit."
However, eventhough the third Hobbit managed to be on top of box office, "The Hobbit: An Expected Journey" is still unbeatable having $84.6 million during its three-day opening way back on Dec. 2012. On the other hand, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" showed in theater on Dec. 2013 had $73.6 million.
Next to the "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" is the "Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb" then followed by "Annie" and "Exodus: Gods and Kings" on fourth spot. After "Exodus" is "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1" and then "Wild" right before "Top Five" on the seventh spot. On the eight spot is "top Five" followed by "Big Hero 6" on ninth and lastly "PK" having $3.5 million only.
