Apple is breaking history as it marked the first time the company giant issued an automatic update. According to Apple the update to its Mac computers will fix the security flaw that might render its computers useless in case hackers will try to exploit it.
Bill Evans, Apple's spokesperson told Reuters in an interview; "The update is seamless. It doesn't even require a restart."
The weakness Apple is trying to fix with its latest patch is a common software component known as network time protocol or NTP. This critical system software is used in coordinating time and date between different computer systems and across the internet as well. This vulnerability in computer systems has been exploited by some hackers in the future and Apple is just taking necessary precaution in order to protect its system and its users. The Carnegie Mellon University's Software Engineering Institute was the first to identify the flaw. The report on the computer systems flaw however was made public by a security bulletin from the Department of Homeland Security last Friday. The vulnerability does not only affect Apple but a dozen other tech companies as well.
Apple has the ability to update its software system automatically and install software updates and patches but the company has not done this for more than two years. For Apple and Mac users, every time a new update or a new patch is available, their device will first ask permission from the user to install the update. This user option however is not available to Microsoft and Windows software. Microsoft has been updating its user's computers systems every time a new vulnerability is detected. This update is automatically done by Microsoft regardless of the user's permission.
Latest reports shows that Apple has already patched its user's software's automatically. Google and it Android OS have yet to release official statement about this crucial update, as well as Microsoft.
