Sony hackers who called themselves "The Guardians of Peace" threatens a 9/11esque attack will be levied on any movie theater that screens the highly-controversial comedy film "The Interview." This bold threat intensified the already high risks and possible repercussion once the movie will be released.
A threating message from the hacker collective reads "The world will be full of fear. Remember the 11th of September 2001. We recommend you to keep yourself distant from the place at that time. Whatever comes in the coming days is called by the greed of Sony Pictures Entertainment."
Previously publicized messages contains budgets to various Sony fills, salary information of Sony's executive officials even medical and social security numbers of Sony employees.
The comedy film "The Interview" satirizes North Korea's supreme leader Kim Jong-un. The film revolves around a reporter and his producer, play by James Franco and Seth Rogen, who were given the chance for an exclusive interview with Kim Jung-un. During the course of the movie, they were recruited by the CIA and sent them on a mission to assassinate the dictator. Considering the movies taboo storyline, a lot of speculation arise that the Sony hack came from North Korea.
Following the recent threats coming from the hacker group, both Rogen and Franco have already cancelled all their planned media appearances.
A couple of cinema groups has already released statement that they will heed the warning and have decided to cancelled the scheduled screening of the movie in their respective cinemas. Among them is Carmike Cinemas. A movie theater company based in Columbus, GA. Carmike Cinemas operated more than 278 theaters in 21 states and has 2,917 screens. Sony has also released a statement that they are not forcing cinema owners to show their movie, they are leaving that decision to cinema operators whether they want to take the risk or not.
Recent reports revealed that the films advance premier scheduled for Thursday in New York has been cancelled.
