10 cokes a day is too much, and we are all aware of that. But the sad fact is that billions of people around the world patronize Coke more than any other drinks. It's like Coke or never!
Coke is packed with sugars. And with growing obesity in America one man from Los Angeles bravely tried and studied how drinking too much coke in a day would affect his health.
The result: protruding belly, cravings for sugar and high blood pressure.
George Prior, 50, drank 10 cokes a day of 355 ml of Coca Cola can in a day for a month. In his statement with Yahoo, Prior said that he got the idea from Jude Law, who drank 10 cokes daily to attain additional weight for his Don Hemingway role.
Prior realized that drinking 10 cans of coke a day would elevate his sugar consumption, but he stated that he wanted to know exactly its effect on his health. He also added drinking 10 cokes daily is not far from the sugar consumptions of the Americans.
For 30 days, he drank 10 cokes a day. He recorded the changes in his physique daily on a video recording. At the end of the 30-day period, Prior gained a high score of added 23 pounds on his weight, his blood pressure elevated to 145/96 and he developed sugar cravings during the period.
The drastic changes in his body weight, blood pressure and sugar cravings are high risk for developing cancer, obesity, heart attack and stroke.
After drinking 10 cokes a day, Prior blood pressure changed from 129/77 to 145/96. His weight jumped up to 12 stone (169 lb) to 14 stone (192 lb) and he developed intense cravings for coke and other sugar products in the 30-day period.
Prior weight gain was due to his additional 1,400 calories and 390 grams of sugar daily in consuming 10 cokes a day in one month. Previously, he was reported consuming only 350g of sugar daily from Coke alone. Prior who is in Paleo diet find it hard to resist Coke during his 10 coke-a-day challenge.
An average American drinks 399 servings of Coke products per year where 50 percent are Coke. There are 39 grams of sugar per serving of Coke. In a year, an average American consumes 4.9 kilograms or 10.8 pounds of sugar from Coke alone.
After consuming 10 cokes a day, "I feel heavier, I can't wear my long pants to work anymore," said Prior in the video. "My clothes all fit tightly and I can't bend over easily," George Prior said.
The United States Department of Agriculture states that Americans take 156 pounds additional sugars each year or 194 grams per day. When Prior drank 10 cokes a day, he consumed 390 grams added sugar everyday.
This year, the World Health Organization is reducing the recommended daily allowance for sugar from 10 percent to 5 percent. Earlier, the recommended daily intake for sugar for men is 36 grams, and 24 grams for women.
But now, the World Health Organization is recommending allowance of about 6 teaspoons or 25 grams of sugar per day.
The American Heart Association recommends restricting sugar intake to not more than half of the daily calorie allowance. For women, recommended daily sugar intake must not be more than 100 calories which is roughly 6 teaspoons and not more than 150 calories per day for men or 9 teaspoons.
