Super-Antioxidant CGA found in Coffee: Protect Against Obesity Study Shows

A new study that was published in Pharmaceutical Research shows an antioxidant present in coffee called chlorogenic acid (CGA) might protect against obesity-related health problems.

Researches from the past have already shown that coffee is the number one source of antioxidants which are known to protect cells from damaged and has been linked to a few health benefits like protection from cancer, cardiovascular and heart disease, even Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

But now there is more to it than just those benefits.

The researchers used a mice for 15 weeks and they fed the mice a high-fat diet at the same time injecting a chlorogenic acid solution for twice a week. It was recorded that the mice did not gain weight during the entire test period and a promising effect against obesity was also found.

Yongjie Ma who is a research associate in the University of Georgia at the College of Pharmacy, told Yahoo that CGA blocked the significant development of a high fat diet - induced obesity. CGA treatment also restrained obesity related problems such as insulin resistance and fatty liver.

It cannot be denied that in the U.S. and even on other countries around the world, 60 percent of adults are overweight and the situation is getting out of control. There is a need for a safe and effective ways of curbing the obesity problems and the diseases that comes with it.

CGA also helps in reducing inflammation and zeroing in on it can counter the bad effects of obesity. But there are certain provisions in this study. The researchers used mice during the test and it was not said if they were already able to test it on human beings. Also they injected the test subject with a relatively high dose of CGA, possibly way higher than one can get in an ordinary cup of coffee. But if the research will be proved also true to human beings, it will definitely be of great advantage.
