Records show that more and more civilians are hooked with the social media. But what's worse, Islamic State has penetrated and has propagated their extremist ideals through the internet.
A 29-year-ol woman from Virginia was apprehended and charged of trying to help an uncover FBI agent to join ISIS in Syria. Identified as Heather Elizabeth Coffman, the woman apparently had written posts in Facebook supporting the Islamic State.
Heather Elizabeth Coffman support for the Islamic State has been very obvious in her rampant posts in the social application. Â Coffman was interrogated by the FBI, but she denied any affiliation with the terrorist group.
With the goal to seize Heather Elizabeth Coffman's involvement with Islamic State, an uncover agent contacted her and pretended to expressed his willingness to become a "shahid" that means martyr in Arabic.
Heather Elizabeth Coffman appeared at the Richmond U.S. District Court on Monday and was detained until her detention hearing on Wednesday. According to Associated Press, Heather Elizabeth Coffman faces offense regarding false statements in supporting the Islamic State.
Heather Elizabeth Coffman support for the Islamic State reportedly began in April. She created various accounts in Facebook under different names and has expressed her stance with the group.Â
On June 23, Heather Elizabeth Coffman even wrote "We are all ISIS, Islamic State of Iraq & Sham," after three days, a friend of Coffman asked her why she wrote it, she replied "I Love ISIS!"
It was in July when an uncover FBI agent approached her in Facebook and told her that he has a friend who wanted to join the group. Heather Elizabeth Coffman immediately referred a facilitator to the uncover agent who can assist his friend to join the Islamic State in Syria.
However, after several negotiations of the uncover agent and Heather Elizabeth Coffman about Islamic State, she denied her involvement with the terrorist group, the courts paper revealed. Â
Mark Schmidt, Coffman's lawyer said that he cannot give any detail about Heather Elizabeth Coffman involvement with Islamic State as he has not spoken clearly with his client.
"As far as I know she hasn't traveled anywhere. Her connections with the outside world would be on the Internet. I imagine you can get into trouble on the Internet, but I imagine you can also think a lot more's going on than really is. If nothing else, this is certainly a cautionary tale about the Internet," Schmidt said.
The court affidavit reveals that Heather Elizabeth Coffman has also invited her sister to join the Islamic State. She also mentioned to the agent that even the man that she claimed as her "husband" was arranged to go to Syria to support the ISIS, just before they separated.
