Vitamin D supplement side effects are indeed present and may cause a lot of discomfort for the person affected. The Vitamin, which is essential for normal body functioning, is also harmful to the body if taken in large doses that may cause an imbalance in the body's health system.

Vitamin D supplements side effects have been sought out for a long time by users of the over the counter supplements. With more and more Americans opting for fast food chains and readymade processed food over cooked food, the increased uptake of supplements becomes more and more explained.  These over the counter supplements do not have the correct measurement of vitamins as they do not factor in the meals to be taken in the course of the day, hence they may lead to an overdose of the vitamins.

Vitamin D itself is essential as it assists the human body in numerous ways. The vitamin is responsible for strong and healthy bones. It is also responsible for treating rickets, weak bones, hyperparathyroidism in people who have few bones and also osteogenesis imperfecta, an inherited disease. Vitamin D is also used for diseases of the heart and blood vessels such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

The Vitamin D supplement side effects are also as plenty. Vitamin D in healthy doses is okay, but overindulgence in the vitamin in what could go over 400 units in a day, causes various side effects such as weakness of the body, general fatigue, loss of appetite, headaches, metallic taste, dry mouths and even vomiting.

Other specialized cases have more specific side effects. For pregnant mothers, consuming more than 4000 units in a day may cause harm to the infant. In people with serious kidney diseases, the vitamin may increase risk of hardened arteries, complicating the situation for such individuals. Vitamin D could also lead to increased calcium levels for people with Lymphoma, Histoplamosis and Sarcoidosis, causing the formation of kidney stones and worsening the kidney. Vitamin D supplement side effects are real and may cause plenty of harm.
