Imagine peacefully chewing some innocent-looking chocolate but, unknown to onlookers, you are getting more than just the normal high associated with the common sweets. Indeed, if you are both a chocolate-lover and an alcohol connoisseur, why limit yourself to one indulgence when you can have the buzz of both worlds?
It seems that is exactly what the Japanese premium chocolate maker Morinaga had in mind when it introduced its new limited edition "Premium Range" Koeda. According to RocketNew24, the twig-shaped treats are especially suited to adult taste buds with its impressive 3.1 percent alcohol content which, for this reason, comes with the mandatory warning not to consume the product when driving. Yes, "Don't eat and drive" might be a catchy phrase in future commercials for this product.
However, this perfect combination can hardly be attributed to Japanese ingenuity alone. It seems that they Europeans are way ahead of the game as they have been brewing and molding them to perfection for years. According to an article in the SpecialtyFood website, alcohol-based or infused chocolates have been around for a while and enjoyed in continental Europe. With the migration of European descent pioneers to America, the tradition travelled as well. Vicki Mirabile of Chicago Importing Co. was quoted in the same article saying that this European tradition of alcohol-infused chocolates is always associated with the festive atmosphere of the holidays, especially Christmas.
And it's not so hard to imagine why. A few of those liqueur-filled chocolate choices featured in the Fortune.com article as gift suggestions for father's day would certainly leave your father a little festive. But they don't come cheap, with a box costing from $30 to more than $60.
But no one seems to be complaining, maybe they all share a collective sigh of relief that at last, some genius actually decided to make these double-treats at all. If I had known earlier that there are chocolates like these, I would have been a sweet tooth sooner. Well, better late than never.
