This is how Jordin Sparks lost 50 pounds and how you can be on your way to doing the same or even going beyond.

Jordin Sparks began her journey toward weight loss on her 21st birthday. She had walking pneumonia. She could not exercise much and neither could she walk for long. It was her prime and she felt that she should be able to do all the things other 21 year olds were up to. So began her journey to fitness. "I made my health my priority, not my jean size," says the singer.

Jordin Sparks narrows down her routine to diet and exercise. "There really is no shortcut." Her exercising began two years ago when she would walk with her cousin every day. Then she began jogging. After jogging for a while, she found a trainer and hit the gym. She dropped 15 pounds in six months by toning up. She adds that building muscle through a bit of strength training grew her muscles, in turn enabling her to increase her metabolism. She now does 12 reps bicep curls on each arm and shoulder presses and tricep extensions daily.

"I also joined zumba classes." Her mum's best friend was a zumba instructor so she joined her classes. She does zumba two or three times a week and burns 900 calories in an hour long session.

On her diet, she says she resolved to stop eating when she was full. "I had to decide if I was eating because I need to or because the food tasted good." She exercised more than she ate. It was difficult to quit junk but she did, for healthier options. "Avoid carbs after 5 p.m.," she says, "and snack on a high-fiber fruit instead. It's more satisfying than that cookie."
