If you've seen the latest trailer of Independece Day: Resurgence, then you might have noticed Will Smith's face didn't even make an appearance. So, if Will Smith is not coming back to reprise his role as Steven Hiller, what happened to the hero from the prequel that didn't make it to the sequel?

Roland Emmerich got creative and wrote him off through a website that was created to promote the film.

If you do not want to know what happens to him, you can stop right here. Spoilers below!

After Independence Day, the events leading up to the Resurgence revealed a hot headline in 2007 that would shake the world. The headline reads "Alien Tech Malfunction Kills Col. Hiller".

The reports indicated that Col. Hiller was test piloting the first alien hybrid fighter plane. In a twist of fate, a malfunction spiraled the vehicle leading Hiller to his untimely death. His presence made him a world icon from the War of 1996 when he lead a selfless attack against the mothership which eventually led to the demise of the alien attackers. He is survived by his son Dylan and wife Jasmine.

And now, there is the Resurgence. It's only a matter of time when the alien race plans to make a come back. What is known for sure, Jasmine will still be played by Vivica A. Fox and Jessie Usher portrays Dylan.

Liam Hemsworth will join the Resurgence team during a time when the human race uses left over and recovered alien technology to further understand what they are fighting against and to ultimately improve their offense and defense in case they come back.

Emmerich wanted to write Will Smith's Col. Hiller in Resurgence, but latest reports indicated that Smith was not up to doing sequels and already had After Earth under his belt.
