This Super Mario Bros Watch Is Worth $19,000

Nowadays watches are practically synonymous with smartwatches. However, many nostalgic folks still love the good old analog watch. But when someone makes a limited edition Super Mario watch, does it justify the astronomical $19,000 price tag?

Watchmaker Romain Jerome just released the Super Mario Bros. Watch and it certainly brings back memories to those old enough to play the first Super Mario games. However, nostalgia watches are a polarizing thing. These watches are typically reserved as limited edition pieces that command very high prices. The new Romain Jerome is no exception.

The Next Web reported that the watch will be produced in a highly limited 85 pieces only. It was also conceptualized to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. on the SNES, a console largely forgotten by many today. For those who can afford and appreciate the watch, the dial features a scene all too familiar with Mario lovers.

The watch face has a highly pixelized Mario jumping towards an equally pixelized cloud from a bush. There is also the magic 1up mushroom that Mario Bros. players know very well as a solid power up. Unfortunately, there are no other special functions to these designs, A Blog to Watch noted.

The Super Mario Bros. Watch is not the first foray of Romain Jerome into nostalgia watches. He had previously released a Pac-Man and Space Invaders watch. Both watches share the same 8-bit look that would look strange on the wrist but would instantly transport its owner back to the 80s.

Engadget noted that the watch is encased in black titanium. It measures a hefty 46 mm and the Mario figurines are coated in enamel. And the years it took Romain Jerome to secure a license from Nintendo to feature a Mario watch could be the reason the watch costs $18,950 exactly.
