In a lavish funeral following the comedienne's wishes, Hollywood paid its last respects to Joan Rivers this Sunday.
The New York Times reports that Ms. Rivers' directions for the funeral were printed in the program the ushers handed out to attendants of the service. The entertainment included a performance by the New York City Gay Men's Chorus, as well as a musical interlude by Broadway and Hollywood star Hugh Jackman.
The program included a quote from Ms. Rivers' 2013 book 'I Hate Everyone ... Starting with Me', where she explained with the wit that made her famous how she wanted the world to pay her its last respects. In her book, she expressed her desire for her funeral to be "Hollywood all the way", where she would want "Meryl Streep crying in five different accents".
The service, which was attended by many of the entertainment world's biggest names such as Whoopi Goldberg, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kelly Osbourne, was held at the Temple Emanu-El in Manhattan, where radio and television personality Howard Stern delivered the eulogy. Fans and photographers stood outside the synagogue to see the guests who came in, indirectly fulfilling Ms. Rivers' wish: "I want paparazzi and I want publicists making a scene!"
Beforehand, other celebrities had paid their respects in different contexts, from social media to late night shows. On the day after Ms. Rivers' demise, late night show host Jimmy Kimmel was joined in Jimmy Kimmel Live by comedienne Sarah Silverman to talk about the late entertainer, in a hilarious exchange of fashion jokes to honor Ms. Rivers' years of Red Carpet commentary.
Ms. Rivers, a comedy legend and the woman who paved the way for present comediennes like Tina Fey and Sarah Silverman, died last Thursday, after having been hospitalized since August 28 following complications from a surgical procedure in her vocal cords. She leaves behind her daughter Melissa Rivers, also a fashion commentator, with whom she worked often in cable channel E! Entertainment Television.
