"Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe" is a 1980 short film directed by Les Blank, in which Werner eats a shoe, literally. He does it to comply with a bet. Although an older movie, this shows a tiny fraction of the director and the bizarre things he does all the time to discover the world.
Werner Herzog is a 72-year-old German director, who's had fame in the entire world for doing daring movies and documentaries that defy existence in all its forms.
With "Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe," he took care of a bet that he had made with Erol Morris that consisted of Erol saying that he would make his first movie a reality and Werner saying that Erol would never get to direct a movie. In 1978, Erol did make it happen and released Gates of Heaven, so as a result of losing, Werner Herzog did eat his shoe.
Of course, he did it with style and got a pot in which he mixed it with different ingredients. Apart from a wonderful Director, Werner Herzog is also a wonderful cook, so he manages to make even a shoe taste good.
The idea of this documentary was not just to show Werner eat a shoe, but to transmit a message. He did not make the bet in the beginning with Erol for him to lose and not make a movie. On the contrary, as he said at the time, "Errol has set a good example. He's a landmark now. And I'm very proud of it. I'm very proud for him and I'm proud for me that I'm pushed him a little bit into, into this."
What the quote stands for in "Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe" is that it is a way to push people and do things. Not to just dream of them, but make them a reality. And if that takes eating a shoe every once in a while, then so be it.
This Director has done multiple movies that work with discoveries and hopes of the world. Like his recent "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" (2010) in which he gets inside a cave that has the world's oldest pictorial proof and shows how humans artwork was in the primitive times.
So, maybe like Werner says in "Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe," we should eat a shoe or a garment if that makes us discover more of ourselves, makes things happen and gives us strength to make our ambitions more than ideas, but actions.
His next movie will be released this year, it's called "Queen Of The Desert" and stars Nicole Kidman, James Franco and Robert Pattinson. It will be about the life of Gertrude Bell. Another story that will have hopes and dreams.
