Natural non-toxic chemicals found in fruits and vegetables may be the cure for untreatable and aggressive cancers that cause relapse in patients.
Phytochemicals are active compounds found in fruits and vegetables which are the key source for their flavor and colors.
According to studies, people who include fruits and vegetables in their diet were found to have lower risks for many diseases including high blood pressure, obesity, heart disease, stroke and many forms of cancer including mouth, throat, stomach and lungs.
Fruits and vegetables also act as antioxidants which help cell DNA and cell regeneration. In addition, studies claim that they also help increase the enzymes that protect the liver.
Experts suggest taking a variety of colored fruits and vegetables daily for optimum health. Among the many recommended are oranges, bananas, broccoli, tomato, sweet corns and onions.
Cardiff University conducted a research and found that a mixture of non-toxic doses of chemicals taken from food and vegetables could help stop aggressive cancers from spreading.
The Chinese developed an herbal medicine called YangZheng XiaoJI which is a combination of 14 different herbs. According to experts, this medicine showed a great potential in reducing cancer cells. It stops the development of new blood vessels which support the growth of cancer cells. It also blocks pathways, preventing the spread of cancer cells in the body.
Cancer treatments are known to be highly-toxic which results to relapse of many patients. Cancer cells then become resistant treatment.
Scientists believe that carefully combined non-toxic chemicals found in fruits and vegetables are the key to solve the issues of relapse.
"Currently, clinicians have a limited number of tools to help them treat the disease once it becomes resistant to mainstream therapy, but an approach that can reach a broad-spectrum of targets without toxicity offers considerable promise," says Dr. Keith Block of Block Center for Integrated Cancer Treatment in Skokie, Illinois.
Professor Wen Jiang from Cardiff University School of Medicine also said, "Traditional Chinese Medicines are an interesting avenue for novel cancer therapies, representing relatively low-toxicity and inexpensive formulations that have been in use for centuries."
Scientists are now conducting further research on phytochemicals.
