Rose McGowan reacted when Caitlyn Jenner was awarded as Woman of the Year
The 42-year-old Charmed actress, Rose McGowan, has never been shy about speaking her mind, she called out Caitlyn Jenner after she received a Glamour Woman of the Year award as Transgender Champion last week, taking issue with Jenner saying in her acceptance speech in which she said, "love to see a little space out there, in the world, for people to self-identify as who they are" and the "hardest part about being a woman is figuring out what to wear."
Glamour's Women of the Year Awards recognise women with a variety of backgrounds and experiences. The magazine stated in its awards round-up that, a year ago, Jenner did not have a name: "The Olympic hero turned reality star patriarch was still living a phantom existence, her changing appearance igniting a tabloid frenzy around the rumor she'd run from for most of her 66 years: that she was transgender. But after years of feeling she had to hide who she is at all costs, she is determined to be relentlessly open. And today, she's finding new meaning in her life."
Rose McGowan took issue with Jenner's remark about fashion.
"Caitlyn Jenner you do not understand what being a woman is about at all. You want to be a woman and stand with us- well learn us. We are more than deciding what to wear. We are more than the stereotypes foisted upon us by people like you. You're a woman now? Well f---ing learn that we have had a VERY different experience than your life of male privilege," she continued.
The post was then deleted.
"Woman of the year? No, not until you wake up and join the fight. Being a woman comes with a lot of baggage. The weight of unequal history. You'd do well to learn it. You'd do well to wake up. Woman of the year? Not by a long shot," she continued
Along with the post, McGowan also reportedly posted graphic memes featuring quotes from Jenner's speech over photos of women being sexually abused, stalked and giving birth, as well as an image of OJ Simpson's murdered ex-wife Nicole Brown covered in bruises. However, she appreciated how brave the former Olympian has been in the past couple of months.
"Let me amend this by saying I'm happy for what she's doing visibility wise for the trans community, and I'm happy she's living her truth, but comments like hers have consequences for other women," she said.
She walked back her statements on Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 17), tweeting, "I'd be thrilled to fight alongside Caitlyn Jenner. I just want her to know there is a monumental fight to be had."
Jenner was one several women honoured at the awards night at Carnegie Hall last week. Tennis champion Billie Jean King, President of Planned Parenthood Cecile Richards, and five Charleston Church shooting survivors were also crowned Women of the Year.
