Benedict Cumberbatch A Knight? Not Yet, But Sherlock Just Took Break From ‘Doctor Strange’ Shoot To Receive CBE From Queen Elizabeth II!

Benedict Cumberbatch has certainly turned into one of the great British treasures of our times since his breakout role embodying one of the most quintessentially English characters of literature, Sherlock Holmes, in the modern-day BBC adaptation of sir Arthur Conan Doyle's beloved hero - and now, Benedict Cumberbatch's knight status seems nearer and nearer.

Earlier this week, Queen Elizabeth II of England, the monarch of Cumberbatch's native UK, gave the Oscar-nominated actor one of the highest honors of the realm, making him a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), just a step away from what could ultimately make Benedict Cumberbatch a knight.

According to Vanity Fair, the CBE is describe as an "order of chivalry of British democracy" and is bestowed to those who have contributed to charity work as well as the arts and sciences - all of these actions that could ultimately make Benedict Cumberbatch a "knight" with a "sir" right before his odd-sounding name.

"It was wonderful, it was the first time I've ever met [Queen Elizabeth] and to meet her and be honored by her was extraordinary," the actor told the BBC about his recent step closer to Benedict Cumberbatch's knight status. "I told her I had just got back last night from filming in Nepal, Doctor Strange for Marvel, then I'll be going straight into the fourth series of Sherlock. She said: 'Oh, it never stops does it?'"

As USA Today reports, while the 39 year-old star is proudly British, it hasn't stopped him from being verbal in his criticism to his country's politics, most recently speaking out against the government for not accepting enough Syrian refugees during the migrant crisis - and still, Benedict Cumberbatch's knight status could be just not too long away!

The actor took his wife, Sophie Hunter, to the big night - could they be meeting the Queen again so she'll make Benedict Cumberbatch a knight in a few years' time? Let's hope!
