After all the chaos over Glenn's apparent death in the third episode of 'The Walking Dead' Season Six, fans may have forgotten that Rick Grimes had a nasty cut on his hand. Now, some people are wondering if the hand will need to be chopped off to avoid Andrew Lincoln's character being turned.
Luckily, 'The Walking Dead' executive producer and makeup guru Greg Nicotero recently spoke to Comicbook.com about what could happen to Rick's hand.
"You know, it's so funny... The whole Rick losing his hand conversation, [Andrew Lincoln] has told me a thousand times, 'Listen, let's just chop it off. I don't know why he has a hand. I think it would be great,'" Nicotero said, adding that cutting off the hand wouldn't be as easy as a previous character's limb.
"I don't think there was ever a time where we didn't do it because we didn't think it wouldn't be great for his character but unlike Hershel's leg where we were able to shoot long dialogue scenes between Hershel and Glenn and we didn't have to worry about the visual effects of digitally removing his foot in every shot," he said.
But Merle lost his hand too, didn't he? That didn't seem to difficult to film.
"With Merle, I designed this cool arm specifically to hide his stump," Nicotero continued. "What we ended up doing was we did one shot where he took it off and showed the stump to Andrea and then he slid it back on."
So will Rick get to keep his hand?
"I think it would be very challenging indeed to try to deal with removing Rick's hand from a technical standpoint," Nicotero concluded.
[SPOILER ALERT! PROCEED WITH CAUTION!]
But there's still one major character who could lose a body part, as he did in the comic book. In 'No Way Out,' Carl Grimes is accidentally shot in the face and loses his eye. When Comicbook.com admits that they are looking forward to seeing how such a scene will play out, Greg Nicotero had an ominous response.
"Yeah, me too actually!" the TWD executive producer said.
