Gerard Butler is reportedly in final negotiations to star in the remake of the 1991 film "Point Break," starring Keanu Reeves and the late Patrick Swayze.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Butler would play the part of Bodhi, the athletic bank robbing ringleader Swayze made popular in the original film. Reeves' character, Johnny Utah, has yet to be cast.
"The updated script moves the action from the southern California surf scene to the international world of extreme sports, but Bodhi remains on a quest to conquer 100 foot waves," THR reported.
Entertainment Industry Trade newspaper reported, that Ericson Core is set to direct the updated version of the action film. Core is known for his cinematography work in the 2001 action flick "The Fast & the Furious".
The first "Point Break" was directed by Kathryn Bigelow, who also directed "Zero Dark Thirty".
Butler's films include "Olympus Has Fallen," "300," and "The Phantom of the Opera," but this will not be the first time the Scottish actor "chased wave for the camera."
In the 2012 film "Chasing Mavericks," a biographical drama about surfer Jay Moriarty, the 44-year-old actor reportedly nearly drowned while trying to shoot a scene. The actor was reportedly hit by two waves and washed through a few rocks.
"We were just paddling in what's usually a safe area, but a freak, rogue set broke through," surfer Zach Wormhoudt told the New York Daily News. "It was a real big set, maybe 12 to 16 feet."
"He was down at least 20, maybe 40 seconds. It's traumatic because you're rolling around a bunch. There are lots of rocks on the inside of the break. We all went through that," he said.
The Los Angeles Times reported that fans of the original "Point Break" are not so ecstatic about the remake.

And, if you insist on remaking Point Break, at least have the DECENCY to cast Matthew McConaughey as Bodhi. Gerard Butler is an insult. — Eric LaValle (@EricLaValle) January 9, 2014
Gerard Butler is playing Bodhi in the new Point Break? Guess the seven people that saw Chasing Mavericks found him a convincing surfer. Booo
