Christmas is here, sort of.
A time for giving gifts and lovely family dinners with the love ones you see once a year. It's only one day so, go head and enjoy it, but remember sticking with a healthier route, will workout great in the long run.
Healthy magazine offers a list of 50 items a cautious eater should avoid during the holidays.
Snacks and appetizers:
Avoid the spinach and artichoke dip. Spinach is often considered a super healthy food but when paired with mayonnaise, sour cream, and cream cheese, it becomes a super unhealthy high calorie snack.
Cheese straws are a party treat, but one straw carries a third of an individuals' daily limit for saturated fat. Be better off replacing cheese straws with pretzels, popcorn, or chips with salsa. Also try to avoid cheese balls. Just popping a few in your month, you're looking at 500 calories.
Sides:
Stuffed potatoes are made with butter, cream cheese, sour cream, and/or cheese. Loaded with more fat and calories than actually needed. Sticking with a regular baked or sweet potato would be the way to go.
"One medium stuffed potato has 316 calories and 8.25 grams of saturated fat." Healthy magazine stated.
Swedish meatballs are a classic but loaded with 400 calories of white bread, butter, heavy cream, and sodium-laden beef broth. Try a lighter version of the meatball with 50 percent less calories and sodium.
Desserts:
Peanut brittle is caramelized sugar, with added nuts and loaded with 150 calories a piece. Instead try going with one piece of pumpkin pie.
Eggnog is not a dessert, but is consumed by many Americans, during the holiday season. With whip creams the holiday drink has 343 calories a glass and 21 grams of sugar. Try making the drink with unsweetened cocoa powder.
